CHAPTER 12

Joey

“You bastard!” Lacy screamed.

Joey pulled the Mustang under the overpass where he’d been before, but he was met by the ex of the man who was now crumbs on the highway off-ramp.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Lacy ran to the front of the car, where he assumed she was going to come and yell at him some more, but she continued to the other side and chewed out Smith. “How could you do that to him? He wasn’t military! He was just a man!”

Smith was no longer high on his success. He sat for a few moments, breathing, looking straight ahead and listening to the woman insult him, as if he needed the abuse to make him feel the pain.

She yelled even more when he didn’t react.

Victoria and Libby quietly moved around to Joey’s side of the car.

He opened the door but didn’t let them get in.

“What are you going to do, sir?” he asked the military man.

“I had no idea they would have such firepower,” Smith whispered. “That had to be a munition dropped by an aircraft. These sons of bitches have air power inside our own backyard!”

“I’ve seen them taking over here, in Kansas, and in Colorado. This is not a ragtag outfit, sir.”

Smith rubbed his beard.

Lacy opened the passenger door. “I don’t care who you are. I’m going to kick your ass.”

Smith looked up at her. “I thought you hated him?”

“I didn’t want him dead!” she wailed, shocked.

Smith got out, and for a few seconds he thought she was going to take a swing at him, but she backed away, in tears.

Several of his fellow soldiers gathered around him, but he still seemed distant and unfocused.

“What should we do, sir?” one of them asked.

Smith continued to rub his beard. “No transport. No heavy weapons. No uniforms. Our orders were to come out here and train, but no one told me it was going to be like this.”

Joey wondered how many soldiers were on his team. He’d seen five or six at different times, but the trailer van was still parked on the bridge above them. There could be fifty men waiting inside.

Libby tapped his arm, then pointed to the shoulder on the other side of the two-lane road where the jerrycans had been placed in a neat row.

“They full?” he mouthed.

She nodded.

The woman was reading his mind. He suspected Smith would eventually confiscate his car, given the situation, so he wanted to act first. He got out and walked with her over to the cans.

“I guess we can put these back in the trunk.”

He and the two women carried the fuel back to the Mustang.

“We filled them from the tanker while you were gone,” she whispered. “Figured if we had the time, we might as well prep for your return.”

“You two are amazing,” he gushed, not sure how to properly express how awesome they truly were. He’d been so wracked with doubt and mistrust of people today, it was nice to have two rock-solid partners.

While Smith talked to
